Distinguished and Famous people from Shellharbour
🏊 Beverley Whitfield
Beverley Whitfield grew up in Shellharbour and trained with her uncle before travelling to Sydney for coaching from Terry Gathercole. At 14 she wrote a school essay imagining herself winning Olympic gold in Munich. Four years later, she did precisely that. In the 1972 Olympic 200-metre breaststroke final, Whitfield was last at the first turn but worked her way through the field, passing three opponents on the final lap to win. She also took bronze in the 100-metre event. The path involved training in Texas as well as Australia, supported financially by her family. It was an unusually successful piece of schoolgirl goal-setting.
⚽ Caitlin Foord
Caitlin Foord was born in Shellharbour in 1994 and played junior football with Warilla Wanderers. She made her senior Australian debut at 16 in 2011 and won the best young player award at that year's Women's World Cup. Originally known as an attacking fullback, she developed into a versatile forward for the Matildas. Her club career has included Sydney FC, teams in the United States and Japan, and Arsenal in England. That international itinerary began with an Illawarra junior club, making her a particularly visible example of local football leading to the highest level.
